Lemon grass?



Lemon grass is an aromatic grass that has traditionally been grown in the tropical regions of India. This aromatic grass has widely been used as a medicinal herb in most parts of the country because of its therapeutic properties and characteristics. It was first presented in India, and now has commercially been harvested and cultivated in many states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, etc.


The climatic condition needed for cultivating and harvesting lemon grass is a warm and humid climate with sufficient sunshine and moderate rainfall of about 300 cm per year. It can also be grown in the semi-arid regions receiving low moderate rainfall. It generally needs medium fertile soil with moderate irrigation, and can also be grown on various types of soils ranging from loam to poor laterite but water containing soils must be avoided for cultivation.

Cultivation and planting of seeds is done at a distance of 40*60 cm, depending upon the land fertility and capacity of rain fall receiving regions.

The lemon grass is tall containing flowering on the tops and long leaves. As this grass does not need heavy rainfall and can grow in moderate fertility soil, this could be a great medicinal crop to grow for all the farmers. The common steps of lemon grass cultivation are given below:

The extraction of the essential oil from the lemon grass is called as distillation. Its extraction process is performed through specific system and particular procedure. Some common steps of lemongrass distillation are given below:

iv]Purifying the oil

The lemongrass essential oil can also be produced by other processes including expression or solvent extraction .

The extracted aromatic essential oil has lots of benefits in the marketing industry. As this oil is a major source of citral oil, it has medicinal and flavoring properties.
